Hiring a Personal Trainer: What to Expect on Your First Session

Whether you’re new to fitness or a seasoned gym-goer, hiring a personal trainer will be your best decision to get in shape and achieve your fitness goals faster. However, your first training session can be a little intimidating as you have no idea what’s going to happen.

1.     Get to Know Each: Discuss Your Goals

The first session is for you and your personal trainer to get to know each other better.  You should tell them about your habits, lifestyle, and fitness goals you want to achieve. 2.     Some Forms to Fill

Depending on the policy of the gym and trainer, usually, there’s some paperwork.  You might need to sign an agreement client contract and some of the following forms:

–       PAR-Q: Physical Activity Readiness form is a questionnaire that is designed to make sure that you’re completely fit to follow any exercise regimen and have no medical condition.

–       Medical History: this is another detailed health history-based form where you will be asked about your heart health. And if you have any joint or bone issues. Or if you are taking any supplements or medicines. You might need a clearance form from your doctor if you have any health-concerned situations. All this is important for your personal fitness coach to know to ensure safety and health. 

3.     Fitness Evaluation

Right after you fill the forms, comes the most important part, fitness assessment to understand your current fitness level. Your trainer will take help from the forms you filled and cover a few key areas such as:

–       Body Assessment: the trainer will measure your weight, height, heart and pulse rate, blood pressure, neck, waist, hips, thighs, and biceps.

–       Body Composition Measurement:  there will be a test to measure your current ratio of fat to lean muscle mass to track your fitness progress.

–       Movement Assessment: your trainer will ask you to do some light movement so he can examine your flexibility, and if you have any spinal arch, joint alignment, underactive, or imbalance issues.

4.     Short and Light Workout

Once all the forms, assessments, and goals are done and discussed, it’s time to undergo a beginner workout. Here your trainer will get the idea of your fitness level and you will get the taste of your trainer’s training style. By the end of the session, your trainer will use all the gathered information to design an explicit fitness plan for you to meet your goals as soon and smoothly as possible.
